Integrity Issue Concerning Leaked AMC 10/12A 2023 Exam

The Issue

Dear Members of the MAA Board of Directors,

It has come to our attentions, as well as that of the wider mathematical community, that there has been a significant breach of confidentiality regarding the upcoming AMC 10/12A 2023 examination. Discussions on the Art of Problem Solving (AOPS) forums have surfaced, along with concrete evidence suggesting that details of the exam were prematurely disclosed to the public.

Specifically, a thread titled "AMC10/12 Best Letter to Guess" wrote: “Confirmed by Evan Chang on Discord OMMC Community for anyone who had doubts before: this is the real 2023 AMC 12A, leaked early. He says he knows two people who asked their proctors and they confirmed the test matched.” Screenshots encapsulating these and other discussions about the leakage—spanning platforms such as AOPS, Discord, and a Chinese social media site—are attached for your perusal.

The ramifications of such an incident are manifold, casting a shadow over the fairness and credibility of the AMC competitions—a keystone of the Mathematical Association of America's global standing and its advocacy for mathematical excellence.

For the numerous dedicated students who have invested considerable time in preparation, this act of malfeasance undermines not just their potential achievements but also the very spirit of scholarly competition. It is these students who stand to lose the most, their earnest efforts eclipsed by the dishonesty of others.

In accordance with the zero-tolerance policy towards cheating as outlined by the MAA (https://maa.org/math-competitions/amc-policies#Cheating we urge the Board to initiate an immediate and thorough inquiry into this matter. With the AMC 10/12 A examinations impending in a mere three days, we strongly advocate for the distribution of revised examination materials to all registered sites and the implementation of stringent measures to avert any future breaches for the subsequent AMC 10/12 B examinations.

It is the collective responsibility of our community to ensure that all students are afforded an equitable and honorable competitive environment.

We trust in the Board's swift and judicious action to uphold the integrity of our esteemed competitions.
