The Issue

Violence against women and girls (VAWG) and misogyny is an epidemic that permeates every level of our society. The journey to a safer, more equitable world begins in the education of young people.

Currently, issues surrounding VAWG and misogyny are often overlooked or inadequately covered in school curriculums. This neglect leaves a significant gap in students’ understanding of respect, consent, and gender equality. It is crucial that young people are educated about these critical issues early on, ideally from primary school level, to cultivate a culture of empathy, equality, and respect.

Research from the World Health Organization indicates that educational interventions can significantly reduce instances of gender based violence. Schools and education are instrumental in shaping social values, and by embedding comprehensive education on VAWG and misogyny into their curriculums, we can build a foundation for future generations free from gender-based violence.

Several countries have successfully implemented school programs aimed at reducing VAWG, resulting in decreased incidents and greater awareness of the issues. For example, a comprehensive program in Sweden has led to a measurable decline in incidents related to VAWG among young people. These programs focus on teaching students about consent, healthy relationships, and dismantling stereotypes that fuel violence and discrimination.

Our children must be equipped with the skills and understanding necessary to challenge misogynistic attitudes and prevent violence before it starts. Implementing curriculum changes requires collaboration between educators, policymakers, and communities to ensure that content is age-appropriate, culturally sensitive, and effective.

I urge the Department of Education to take immediate action in integrating VAWG and misogyny education into the national school curriculum. Together, we can foster a future generation that is knowledgeable, compassionate, and committed to ending gender-based violence.

Please sign this petition to demand change and ensure that all students are provided with the education necessary to combat VAWG and misogyny. Together, we can make a lasting impact.
