Integrate Light Pollution Awareness into Elementary Education

The Issue

Light pollution is a global issue that affects not only our night skies but also marine and terrestrial wildlife, particularly ocean populations such as salmon. Artificial Light at Night (ALAN) disrupts the natural behaviors of animals, including migration patterns, mating cycles, and feeding habits. This disruption can lead to a decline in species populations, threatening biodiversity and the balance of ecosystems (Source: American Bird Conservancy).

By making students aware about the impact of light pollution and how simple changes can make a big difference, we can inspire future generations to take action to reduce light pollution and protect the world’s ecosystems.

What We’re Asking For:

  1. Create Hands-On, Local Learning Opportunities:
We encourage the use of local examples, like the salmon migration in our rivers, to help students understand the impact of light pollution on ecosystems. Hands-on learning and field trips can make the issue more relatable to young students.
  2. Support Student-Led Awareness Campaigns:
We urge schools to support student-led initiatives to raise awareness about ALAN, including creating posters, presentations, and organizing local events to encourage community action against light pollution.
  3. Encourage Active Participation in Environmental Protection:
We ask schools to provide opportunities for students to participate in environmental initiatives that aim to reduce ALAN, such as using shielded street lights and timers and motion-sensors in outdoor spaces.

Why This Matters:

We believe that by integrating awareness of this issue into the elementary school level, we can make a positive difference in our communities and protect the future of our ecosystems.

We urge educators, school board members, and policymakers to recognize the value of including this important topic in elementary education. Begin with our community, and let's inspire young minds to preserve our precious night skies. Please sign this petition to show your support.
