Integrate Container Deposit Scheme at University of Melbourne

The issue

Sign this petition to urge the University of Melbourne to take immediate action in integrating the Container Deposit Scheme for all eligible containers on campus!

Implementing a 10-cent container deposit and refund point at the University of Melbourne would significantly enhance recycling efforts and reduce litter. The Container Deposit Scheme (CDS) in Victoria promotes recycling of drink containers by offering a financial incentive, cutting litter by up to half and lowering council clean-up costs.

With over 50,000 students, each contributing to landfill, accessible recycling points on campus would make a significant difference. The university is an ideal location, accessible to students, staff and locals, facilitating active recycling participation. One of the University of Melbourne’s sustainability targets for 2025 is reducing waste to landfill to 10kg per person, as outlined in the Sustainability Plan 2030. Implementing a container deposit point would contribute greatly to reaching this target.

This initiative aligns with Victoria's goal to divert 80% of waste from landfill by 2030, advancing towards a circular economy. By hosting a deposit point, the university demonstrates its commitment to sustainability, making every container count towards a greener future.
