Difficulties at CSUN CECS (Department of Computer Science)

The Issue

Hello, my name is David Antonio Pedroza, and I am currently a sophomore at California State University, Northridge. I am a Computer Science major who has encountered a few difficulties at the College of Engineering and Computer Science, notably in the Department of Computer Science. Listed are some of the challenges that my peers and I have faced firsthand and have witnessed other students struggle with.

  • Insufficient Professors (potential delay in graduation)
  • Unable to find open spots for classes
  • Class Availability for courses
  • Flawed wait list structure
  • Unmotivated and unpassionate tutoring service

Along with these concerns come the unfortunate consequences which we have observed to be:

  • Due to a shortage of professors, students are unable to proceed with their B.S. degree requirements, causing them to fall behind.
  • Due to a flawed waitlist structure and class availability, students are forced to take GE semester courses rather than core major courses.

By signing this, you are demonstrating to the Department of Computer Science, as well as other departments at CSUN, that comparable concerns exist and that it is important/relevant to you and other students; it is in need of being addressed in a timely manner.

If the president and other staff acknowledge this petition and it continues to gain traction, it will allow many students to get back on track with their graduation schedules, generate more space for core classes, and provide them with a greater variety in acquiring the class schedules they desire that accommodate many student's circumstances.

Thank you for recognizing this issue and signing the petition; we as students sincerely appreciate your support. If you wish to review the petition proposal I have written for further information, explanations, and recommendations made, it is attached below.

Best Regards,

- David Antonio Pedroza

  • Improve the waitlist system as suggested under the “Waitlist Structure and Class Availability” heading
  • Include more class availability times to accommodate student’s different circumstances
  • Focus on making the tutoring center more friendly along with student tutors to accommodate for insufficient professors

These recommendations were made to help start turning our department around and achieve a top position in CSU Computer Science. We sincerely appreciate you taking the time to read our concerns and take our recommendations into consideration for a better learning environment, and a better CSUN. Thank you, and we hope to hear back from you soon.
