Installation of Fibre-to-the-Premises (FTTP) to areas around Winchester
The Issue
This petition aims to register interest for residents living in Otterbourne, Silkstead, Hursley, Colden Common, Compton, Shawford, Twyford and Chandlers Ford for the installation of FTTP (or Fibre-to-the-Premises) broadband service.
In the current pandemic, the requirement for reliable, fast and available Wifi is becoming more and more important as residents continue to work remotely from home. In my experience, any time both my parents and myself try to balance several video conference calls a day or access online databases or file-sharing services (One Drive, Dropbox, Google Drive, etc.) we struggle with the bandwidth available, which often results in a poor internet connection.
In an attempt to explore better options, I have been on the phone with several broadband providers about receiving better access to fibre optic including Virgin Media, BT, Plusnet, TalkTalk, Now TV, Sky, Vodafone and EE. Several of these companies have explained that in order for them to deliver FTTP to our areas, they would need evidence that this was something that our residents have an appetite for. While this is a path I’m prepared to explore, I also think we should broaden our vision for how we might achieve this.
AltNets, or Alternative Networks, could potentially offer a viable solution. AltNets represent a movement away from the UK’s reliance on companies such as BT and Openreach for our physical broadband infrastructure. Instead, they are smaller, more agile companies that aren’t so tied to the country’s creaking copper network infrastructure. Examples of AltNets include: Toob, Trooli, Swish Fibre and Zzoomm.
As it stands, several of the areas included in this petition already have access to FTTC (or Fibre-to-the-Cabinet) – which offers top speeds of up to 80Mbps, although most ISP’s deliver slower speeds. If we are successful in convincing one or several of these companies to install Openreach fibre-optic solutions, then the FTTP (or Fibre-to-the-Premises) they install could offer residents speeds of up to 900mbps.
