The situation becomes even more dangerous at night, and tragically, we have already lost a life due to the absence of these crucial safety measures.
This lack of infrastructure stands in stark contrast to the neighboring areas like Mountainside, NJ, which have implemented traffic lights to protect their residents. We have seen firsthand the peace and order traffic lights bring, and there is no justifiable reason for this critical safety feature to be absent between Union and Springfield.
Route 22 is a major highway where vehicles travel at high speeds, making pedestrian crossings especially hazardous. According to the New Jersey Department of Transportation, pedestrian fatalities are a severe issue, with traffic-related deaths rising in recent years.
