The Issue

For the past three years, my heart has been heavy with worry every time I hear a crash from outside our home at the intersection of Elberta Dr and Shortys Lane in Pleasant View, UT. My residence is home to individuals with disabilities, including one young man who experiences acute anxiety whenever these accidents occur, terror rising with each sound of metal colliding. The frequency is alarming and the risks are real, affecting not just my home but the entire community, where families with children and even a nearby high school are in constant danger.

The city council's decision to install a two-way stop at this busy cross-section has proven ineffective. Accidents continue to pile up as this option falls short of addressing the safety concerns adequately. A more robust solution, such as a roundabout or a stop light, could substantially improve the safety and security of all who traverse this intersection daily.

Data supports the need for enhanced traffic control measures. According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, roundabouts have been shown to reduce fatal collisions by about 90%, injury collisions by 75%, and overall collisions by 35%, compared to intersections controlled by stop signs or signals. Installing a stop light or a roundabout could similarly decrease the accident rate significantly, ensuring that our community is protected and that our roads support safe travel for everyone.

Our residents deserve the peace of mind that comes with knowing our streets are safe. For families, for children walking to the nearby high school, and for every Pleasant View resident, installing a more effective traffic control system is not just a precaution but a necessity.

I implore the Pleasant View city council to consider the well-being of its citizens and take timely action to prevent future accidents. Implementing either a stop light or a roundabout at the intersection of Elberta Dr and Shortys Lane is crucial. It is time to ensure the safety of our children and all individuals who are part of this vibrant community.

Please sign this petition to urge the city council to implement these necessary changes and make Pleasant View a safer place for all.
