On Saturday 27th June, another car crashed into a building on our road and injured a pedestrian, illustrating once again the dire need for effective traffic calming measures on Portway. This was not an isolated incident; it has happened before and, without intervention, it will happen again. The speed at which cars drive, often racing through our residential area, poses a terrifying threat to residents and business owners who fear for their safety. No one should have to live in constant fear of being injured or killed in what should be the safety of their own neighbourhood. It’s is time to let Newham Council and the Metropolitan Police know our strength of feeling on this issue.

Portway is a vibrant community, home to a school, a mosque school, two parks, a church, many independent businesses, and of course  many residents. However, its current state as a speedway for reckless drivers undermines the safety and peace of our community. By implementing strategic traffic calming measures, we can transform Portway into a safer environment for everyone.

Statistics from traffic studies confirm that measures such as speed bumps, rumble strips, cameras and increased signage can dramatically reduce vehicle speeds and, consequently, the risk of accidents. These solutions have been effectively employed in communities nationwide, significantly improving road safety.

We urge the local council to prioritise the safety of its residents by allocating funds and resources towards the urgent installation of traffic calming measures on Portway. We need immediate action to prevent any future tragedies and to provide peace of mind to all who live, work, and visit here.
