Install stop-arm cameras on Waterford Township school buses
The Issue
I have been reading complaints for years about drivers passing buses without a care, and now that I have seen it for myself, multiple times, and we are only in the first week of school, I recognize the serious problem. The safety of our children, our future, should never be compromised. Too often, reckless drivers ignore the extended stop-arms of school buses, putting the lives of students at risk as they board or exit the bus.
In order to protect our students, Waterford Township School District must install stop-arm cameras on all school buses. These cameras are a proven deterrent against this dangerous behavior, capturing evidence of violations and helping to enforce laws that are meant to protect our children.
According to the National Association of State Directors of Pupil Transportation Services, it's estimated that over 13 million drivers illegally pass school buses every year. This is a disturbing statistic given that a single incident could lead to catastrophic consequences, not only affecting the families involved but shaking the entire community.
Other districts across the country have successfully reduced the number of violations by implementing stop-arm cameras, resulting in safer bus rides for students. These districts have seen an increased rate of holding violators accountable, leading to decreased repeat offenses and a heightened sense of awareness among all motorists.
Waterford Township can and should follow this example. The cost of installing these cameras is a small price to pay compared to the potentially tragic loss they help prevent or can be prevented by partnering with programs such as BusPatrol. The well-being of our children is in the hands of the adults making these decisions, and it is their duty to ensure that every measure is taken to protect student safety.
Let's advocate for the installation of stop-arm cameras to provide an added layer of protection for our children.
