Chronic speeding has become a significant safety concern in our Gearydale neighborhood, especially as it serves as the back entrance to Pleasant Hill Elementary. Every day,  parents and children navigate our streets amid cars rushing by at alarming speeds, whether it be our own neighbors, DoorDash/Uber Eats, or even parents zipping off from PHE drop-off. What should be a peaceful environment has turned into a dangerous thoroughfare. 

The safety of our children and all residents is in jeopardy. Too often, we witness near-misses between speeding vehicles and pedestrians, particularly during school drop-off and pick-up hours. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, even a small reduction in vehicle speed considerably improves the chances of survival in traffic collisions. Given the proximity to a school, the introduction of speed humps is not just a precaution; it's a necessity.

Our community has expressed these concerns repeatedly, yet little action has been taken. Installing speed humps would effectively deter speeding and provide a safer environment for all. Speed humps have proven successful in neighborhoods similar to ours, reducing accidents and calming traffic flow. Their installation would protect not only our children as they head to and from school, but also improve the quality of life for all residents by reducing noise and the risk of accidents.

We urge the city of Pleasant Hill to prioritize the installation of speed humps in our neighborhood. By doing so, we can reclaim our streets and ensure a safe passage for every child, cyclist, and pedestrian. Your support is crucial in making this change happen.
