The issue

Our street is home to a beloved recreational dog park, which attracts dozens of visitors daily. The entrance to the park is unfortunately situated near the road, and this has led to a persistently perilous situation for both pedestrians and dogs, as many people walk their dogs to the dog park, or drive and park their car right near the road as they are getting their dogs from their car. To make matters worse, the street is long and straight, making it a preferred route for drivers who enjoy speeding, often ignoring the safety and well-being of others in the neighborhood. This is evidenced by the multiple tread/tyre marks left on the road, proving that the street is used for hooning and burnouts. Disturbingly, there have been multiple incidents where individuals and their pets have narrowly escaped being struck by vehicles traveling at excessive speeds.

It's only a matter of time before a tragic accident occurs on our street, one which could easily be prevented if appropriate measures are taken. Therefore, we urge the Bendigo council relevant authorities to take swift action in order to safeguard our community. We propose the installation of speed humps on our street, coupled with a reduction in the speed limit to 40 km/h. This dual approach will serve as an effective deterrent to reckless driving, protecting both our residents and the countless visitors who frequent the dog park.

According to local studies and traffic safety reports, streets with speed humps witness a reduction in vehicle speed by up to 60%, and the risk of accidents is significantly minimized. Moreover, implementing a lower speed limit is aligned with safety recommendations for areas with high pedestrian traffic, such as those near parks and recreational spaces.

We appeal to the Bendigo council and relevant authorities to prioritize this issue, recognizing the urgency of the situation and the peace of mind that these changes would bring to our community.

Please sign this petition to support the installation of speed humps and the reduction of the speed limit on our street, ensuring a safer environment for all who live and visit here.
