Our neighborhood in Honesdale has a growing concern that needs urgent attention. I am personally affected by the ongoing safety issues on Tryon Street, where speeding vehicles pose a significant threat to the children who play and live in our community. Previously, I requested the installation of a "Children at Play" sign to warn drivers to slow down, but unfortunately, the sign was placed so high on a telephone pole that it is obstructed by trees and barely visible to passing motorists. I have also added my own signs posted outside my home in which seem to be ignored.
Our children deserve a safe environment to play and commute in, without the constant fear of speeding cars. Recent data from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration indicates that traffic calming measures, like speed bumps, can reduce speed-related accidents by up to 60%. With residential areas accounting for a significant portion of pedestrian casualties annually, it is imperative that we make our streets safer for everyone.

Implementing speed bumps on Tryon Street will serve as an effective deterrent to speeding. Unlike the ineffective sign, speed bumps will physically compel drivers to slow down, providing immediate reduction in speed and enhanced control, particularly in areas with frequent child pedestrians.
