As a concerned resident of Islip, NY, and a parent, I am deeply worried about the safety of our children and all pedestrians in our community. The residential streets off of Route 111 serve as daily routes for many, including school children, and the lack of sidewalks makes walking or biking particularly hazardous. 

The absence of traffic calming measures such as speed bumps has resulted in frequent speeding and reckless driving in our neighborhood, increasing the risk of accidents and injuries. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, "traffic calming measures can significantly reduce traffic speeds and enhance safety", particularly in areas with high pedestrian traffic and no sidewalks.

Installing speed bumps is a simple yet highly effective solution that will compel drivers to slow down, safeguarding our streets for children, pedestrians, and cyclists. Other towns across the state and nation that implemented this approach have seen considerable reductions in traffic-related incidents.

Let's urge the Town of Islip to take action before a tragic incident occurs. We need to make our neighborhood a safer place for all.
