The Issue

Living on Norfolk Street in Birmingham, MI has become increasingly dangerous for all families, including those with young children, people who enjoy walking and those with animals. Too often, people have had to move quickly off the street onto neighbors yards to avoid the threat posed by high-speed drivers barreling down our residential street. This concern is shared with 100% of the residents of Norfolk St and surrounding streets in Birmingham Farms.

Norfolk Street lacks sidewalks, a feature which contributes to the heightened risk for pedestrians, children, and animals alike. Daily, cars cut through our neighborhood, speeding and blatantly ignoring the stop sign at the intersection of Norfolk and Wakefield, transforming what should be a peaceful residential area into a hazardous thoroughfare.

Research indicates that excessive speed not only increases the risk of accidents but also significantly elevates the severity of injuries sustained during such incidents. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, speeding was a factor in 26% of all traffic fatalities in 2019. Our community, especially its most vulnerable members, should not become part of these alarming statistics.

Installing speed bumps on Norfolk Street would discourage speeding, improve safety, and protect our families, children, walkers, and pets from the dangers of reckless driving. It's a proven solution that can help reduce vehicle speeds and motorist negligence. Our neighboring city, Beverly Hills, piloted 2 speed humps at the end of 2023 due to excessive speeding and reckless driving. As of July 2025, both speed humps are still present signaling they are effective and needed.  Royal Oak, Dearborn, Ferndale and Detroit all utilize Speed Humps to control speeding. Birmingham needs to be "A Walkable City".

We urge the Birmingham City Council to consider this petition to make Norfolk Street safer for every resident and visitor. Safety should be a right, not a privilege. Please sign this petition to show your support for making our neighborhood a safer place to live and thrive.
