Install Secure Bike & Scooter Shelters at RTD Rail Stations

The Issue

Bikes & scooters are one of the main modes that supply ‘last mile’ connectivity to transit bus & rail lines. This means that good infrastructure & facilities for cyclists & scooter riders is extremely important to provide the best possible transit experience & maximize ridership.

Bike / scooter theft & vandalism remains an issue in the Denver Metro area. With the expected changes in RTD policy that will permit e-bikes (see our campaign here) it is likely that riders will want to leave personal transportation devices at bus & train stations that cost upwards of $2,000 to replace if stolen.

We note the new secure bike shelters that have been installed on the US36 corridor (serviced by RTD’s Flatiron Flyer) in partnership with Broomfield / Westminster & operated by Commuting Solutions. These shelters, which are accessed by smartcards registered to cyclists & scooter riders, offer a secure area which is protected from the elements. They are backed by a program which maintains the areas & removes any abandoned bikes & scooters after 30 days.

We call on RTD to initiate a project to install shelters at all their rail stations, working in partnership with local cities such as Denver, Aurora, Arvada, Lakewood & Golden, key local stakeholders plus the State of Colorado as appropriate.
