Install Safety Fencing at Barnhall Meadows/wonderful barn Playground

Install Safety Fencing at Barnhall Meadows/wonderful barn Playground
The Issue
My son is currently on a wait list for autism. We have been to the playground twice, along with his sister, both who are under the age of three and haven't been in months. While helping my younger child down the slide, my son was out of my view for a mere 2-3 seconds. When I found him a few seconds later, he was in the long brush heading towards a swamp area near the motorway. The motorway is only yards from the playground, and from what I can see, it's only closed off by trees and bushes. This could have been very different. We all supervised our kids but it is completely unacceptable for the council to refuse a fence around a playground.
The playground at Barnhall Meadows/wonderful barn in Leixlip, County Kildare, is designed to be a safe haven for children, a place where they can play and explore. However, its proximity to a busy main road and a potentially dangerous water area poses significant safety concerns. Despite the council's stance that children should be supervised at all times, it is not always feasible, especially for parents or guardians managing more than one child. This is particularly challenging for families with children who have additional needs, such as autism, where constant close supervision does not eliminate the inherent risks presented by the playground's location.
After reaching out to Kildare County Council, it was disappointing to hear that there are no current plans to install a protective fence around this playground. Installing a fence would greatly reduce the danger and risks for children, especially those who can be unpredictable or quick-moving. It would provide peace of mind for parents and guardians, ensuring that children can have a safer space to play with reduced risk of wandering towards oncoming traffic or near the water.
In light of these risks, we urge the Kildare County Council to reconsider and take immediate action by installing a safety fence around the playground. Ensuring the safety of all children should be a paramount concern for our community. By signing this petition, you can help us advocate for these essential safety measures at Barnhall Meadows/wonderful barn protecting our children from unnecessary harm and allowing them to enjoy the playground as it should be—fun and safe. Please join us in making a difference for the safety of our children and community.
