Walsall Canal, a serene and historically significant waterway in the heart of Walsall town centre, is a place where people gather to enjoy the fresh air and beautiful surroundings. However, this place of leisure has also been the site of tragic accidents. My beloved sister lost her life here due to a drowning accident. This unimaginable tragedy has prompted me to act and ensure no other family has to experience such heartbreak.

Many canals across the UK have already been equipped with safety measures like fencing and barriers, reducing the risk of accidents and making them safer for everyone, especially children and non-swimmers. With Walsall Canal being located in a busy town centre, it is vital that similar precautions are taken here. Numerous studies have shown that the presence of barriers significantly reduces the likelihood of accidental drownings.

We urge the local authorities of Walsall to immediately install safety fences or barriers around the canal, particularly in high-traffic areas. This is a practical, actionable step that can prevent future tragedies and provide peace of mind to families visiting the area. The canal is a vital part of our community, and making it safer should be a top priority.
