As a parent, I've become acutely aware of the challenges that arise whenever my 10-year-old son and I are out and about, especially when it comes to public restrooms. My son often accompanies me into the women's restroom, where his discomfort arises due to the presence of women and  girls, and understandably so. On the other hand, the thought of him using the men's restroom unsupervised fills me with concern and anxiety about his safety.

Our society needs to be attentive to the comfort and security of our children, particularly in everyday settings such as public restrooms. It's high time we advocate for designated public toilet facilities aimed at children under 18. This would bridge the gap between the familiar surroundings they experience at home and the intimidating, adult-centric environments they face elsewhere.

Statistics from the National Parent Survey reveal that 70% of parents share my apprehension. This is a significant indication that a dedicated, safe space within our public amenities is of utmost importance. Furthermore, by not addressing this need, we inadvertently risk putting our children in potentially awkward or unsafe situations.

Cities like Sydney and London are already pioneering child-friendly spaces by incorporating family friendly restrooms in public venues. These facilities incorporate features like lower basins, child-sized toilets, and privacy-enforcing designs that cater specifically to the needs of younger individuals.

I propose that we implement similar structures across our city to ensure the safety and comfort of every child. We can begin by advocating local councils to assess current restroom facilities and design inclusive spaces in all future public building projects. By bringing this petition to the attention of our policymakers, we can catalyze essential change in our public infrastructure.

Let us act now to create safer, more inclusive environments for our children. Implementing child-specific public toilets will not only alleviate parental concerns but also foster a more understanding and accommodating society.
