The Issue

My sister was tragically killed by a hit-and-run driver while attempting to cross Eastern Boulevard, a busy road in Montgomery, Alabama. This street, bustling with constant traffic, lacks safe pedestrian crossings, making it hazardous for anyone who attempts to cross. Her loss is not only personal but highlights a systemic issue that endangers many lives every day.

Eastern Boulevard is a major artery in our city, connecting neighborhoods, businesses, and schools. Yet, the absence of pedestrian crossings forces people, including children, to risk their lives just to reach the other side. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Alabama reported 125 pedestrian fatalities in 2020 alone. Each of these fatalities represents a tragic and preventable loss.

A simple solution lies in the installation of well-marked, signal-controlled pedestrian crossings. These would provide safe passage for pedestrians and encourage drivers to be cautious and attentive. Invisible crosswalks, illuminated at night, and audible signals for the visually impaired, are necessary modern features that must be integrated for maximum safety.

Furthermore, Eastern Boulevard should be subject to a comprehensive road safety audit to identify and address other potential hazards to both drivers and pedestrians. Reducing speed limits and increasing signage could also contribute significantly to making this boulevard safer for everyone.

Inaction is not an option. We must prioritize the safety of our community members and prevent further tragedies. By signing this petition, you are urging local authorities to take immediate and effective action to ensure safe crossing points for pedestrians on Eastern Boulevard in Montgomery, Alabama. This simple measure will protect lives and honor those, like my sister, who should never have had their journey end prematurely. Sign this petition to demand change now.
