Hi everyone,
It’s been just four days since a tragic accident that brought this issue into sharp focus—and in that short time, we’ve gathered over 450 signatures! That number speaks volumes about the strength, care, and urgency of our community. Let’s keep this momentum going and continue showing how much we value safety for all who walk, bike, and drive through this area.
I also wanted to share a timely update following direct communication with Commissioner JoAnn Birrell and recent action by Cobb County officials.
Commissioner Birrell confirmed that this is a top priority for the County, and that Cobb DOT is actively reviewing both short- and long-term solutions. Most notably, DOT conducted an on-site inspection of the area on June 25, which reflects direct engagement with our concerns.
In the short term, signage is being evaluated for immediate installation. For the long term, a traffic study will be conducted once school is back in session to ensure accurate data collection. The recent accident remains under police investigation, and the County has stated they are doing all they can to make this area safer.
💬 Our Community Response
We’ve responded with gratitude for the County’s engagement and expressed our collective trust in Commissioner Birrell’s long-standing reputation for prioritizing public safety. We also shared that this community’s eagerness comes from a place of support and a desire for transparency and timeliness.
To help keep momentum:
- We’ve requested further clarity on the timing of short-term signage,
- More detail on the upcoming traffic study’s scope and schedule, and
- Any opportunity for public input as decisions progress
I have also offered support based on relevant professional experience around organizing timelines and identifying opportunities to accelerate progress, should that be helpful to County staff.
📅 What’s Next
Unless we receive updates from the County sooner, we will be following up again on July 11 and will keep everyone informed as new information becomes available.
Please continue to share this petition with neighbors, school contacts, and your networks—the more unified voices we have, the stronger our presence becomes.
Thank you for standing up for safer streets,
Courtney DiStefano
