Hi everyone,
First, thank you so much to each of you who has signed and shared this petition. Your support is already making a difference — and I wanted to share an update on what’s happened in just the first 12 hours.
I’ve reached out directly to Commissioner JoAnn K. Birrell to express the urgent need for safety improvements at the crosswalk on Jamerson Road near Davis Elementary. I emphasized the structure of the road (three lanes with a median and a 45 mph speed limit), the recent tragic accident, and the need to implement improvements before school resumes.
Here’s where things currently stand:
Commissioner Birrell responded with the following:
“I would be happy to meet with you after DOT staff has evaluated the intersection and we can see what options are available. A traffic study cannot be done until school is back in session so that we can get accurate data. I will see if a recent study has been done at this intersection and any data collected if at all. I appreciate your feedback and interest in keeping our community safe. The accident that occurred yesterday is still under investigation by police.”
In addition, Drew Raessler, Director of Cobb County DOT, has also responded and confirmed that his team is reviewing existing data for this location and will be collaborating with the Cobb County Police Department as part of their evaluation process. This coordination is a positive development and shows that our concerns are being taken seriously.
To maintain momentum, I’ve also:
- Requested a meeting to align on expectations and actions as soon as the intersection evaluation is complete
- Reiterated the need for a formal traffic study once school is back in session
- Asked for consideration of short-term safety solutions that can be implemented in the interim
I’ve also reached out to Dr. Ashley Beasley, principal of Davis Elementary, and David Chastain, our Cobb County School Board representative, to ensure school leadership is aware and included in the conversation.
We expect local news coverage at the crosswalk this evening, which will help raise visibility of the accident and amplify our community’s demand for change.
How you can help:
- Keep sharing the petition — the more signatures we collect, the stronger our message becomes.
- Talk to your neighbors, school groups, and PTA to help spread the word.
Thank you again for standing up for the safety of our children and our neighborhood. I will continue to keep you updated as progress unfolds.
With gratitude,
Courtney
