Install protected bike lanes on 38th Avenue and Sheridan Blvd

Install protected bike lanes on 38th Avenue and Sheridan Blvd
The Issue
The intersection of Sheridan and 38th in Denver is not just busy, it’s deadly. The most heartbreaking moment I’ve ever witnessed in this neighborhood was a father standing at that intersection after his son was killed while riding his bike. That tragedy happened right next to my home. It should never have happened, and it must never happen again.
38th Avenue and Sheridan Boulevard are critical thoroughfares in Denver that connect various neighborhoods and essential services. However, the complete absence of protected bike lanes poses a severe risk to cyclists and pedestrians alike. According to the Denver Department of Transportation's recent data, this intersection ranks among the top-five most dangerous for cyclists in the city, seeing an alarming increase in accidents over the past five years.
Installing protected bike lanes is a concrete and actionable step that can transform these streets into safe passages for everyone. These lanes act as buffers between cyclists and vehicular traffic, drastically reducing accidents. In cities like Portland and Minneapolis, where protected bike lanes have been implemented, there has been a 40% reduction in cycling accidents and injuries. Denver, with its commitment to green initiatives and sustainable urban transport, should follow suit by prioritizing the safety of cyclists and pedestrians.
We call on the Denver Department of Transportation and Infrastructure (DOTI), the Denver City Council, and Mayor Mike Johnston’s office to take immediate action and install protected bike lanes on both sides of 38th Avenue and Sheridan Blvd. Ensuring the safety of our cyclists not only aligns with the city’s Vision Zero goals but also promotes a healthier, more sustainable mode of transport citywide.
Denver has already taken strides toward being a leader in sustainable urban development, and this initiative will further that progress by demonstrating a commitment to public safety and environmental stewardship. Let us transform our streets into beacons of safety, showing that life, in all its movements, is treasured and protected.
Please join me in making 38th and Sheridan a safer place for everyone. Sign the petition today to put pressure on our local leaders to act before another life is tragically lost unnecessarily.
