The Issue

A few years ago, a heartbreaking incident in which a child was hit by a car ignited a commitment in our town to advocate for improved pedestrian and student safety in our community. Since then, our city and volunteers have actively supported planning efforts for safer school zones. Which not only has the potential to prevent future tragedies but investments also improve the community feel and safety for everyone.

Would you believe it that the data show that all our schools exist on high injury roads? Fatal crashes in Belmont are 50%+ higher than comparable cities like Mooresville and Davidson. I've learned a lot during this time, and I’ve personally dedicated time to push for changes that center student safety. Other volunteers agree that traffic safety near schools is a top priority!

Today, we had a group of over 20 people from the city, county, and residents who 'walk audited' page elementary to closely examine and provide input on the priorities for improvements. An overwhelming sentiment was that Keener Blvd is need serious attention and we voted a safe crosswalk as a priority.

This is a state road and requires approval from the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT) to install a High-Intensity Activated crossWalK (HAWK) signal. A HAWK signal will drastically improve the ability for pedestrians to cross safety. It stops traffic only when a pedestrian is clicks the signal. According to the Federal Highway Administration, such signals have been shown to reduce pedestrian crashes by up to 69%, making them an invaluable addition to any pedestrian-heavy area such as school zones.

As a community deeply invested in the safety of our children, we urge NCDOT to allow us to install this vital safety measure. We have already gathered substantial community support, as evidenced by a previous petition that highlighted residents' demand for investments in infrastructure near schools. We want to take this further because NCDOT's primary metric of need is the existing pedestrian count. But its so dangerous that no one even wants to cross there! So I asked, can we gather evidence of resident support and they said - yes that would help.

Let us come together as a community and advocate for a vital improvement in our community's safety. Sign this petition today and help us urge NCDOT to take action for the safety of our children and the benefit of our entire community.
