The Issue

Petition for More Public Garbage Cans in South Shore (5th Ward, Chicago)

The Office of the Alderman Representing South Shore, City of Chicago

Why This Matters

South Shore is a culturally rich, vibrant community. Yet, residents have long endured inadequate city investment in basic sanitation infrastructure. Overflowing trash bins, littered streets, and limited public waste disposal contribute to health risks and a diminished sense of neighborhood pride.
We believe every Chicago neighborhood deserves clean, safe, and functional public spaces. Why is it that Black neighborhoods often get the short end of the stick?

What We’re Asking For:
We, the undersigned residents and supporters of South Shore, respectfully call on the City of Chicago and our alderman to:

-Conduct a needs assessment to prioritize areas most affected by litter.
-Allocate funds to install durable, well-maintained public garbage cans in high-traffic areas, parks, commercial corridors, and bus stops.
-Partner with community organizations to assist in monitoring and maintaining these waste stations.
-Launch a public education campaign encouraging proper disposal of trash and recyclables.

Our Commitment:
BlkOut Theatre Project is proud to drive this initiative in partnership with local South Shore residents and 5th Ward stakeholders. Our community already hosts cleanup events and beautification efforts — now we seek systemic support from city leadership.
