Install more caution lights near dangerous intersections

The Issue

On May 6th, my wife and I were involved in a fatal car wreck on Highway 68 near Collinsville, Alabama. The accident involved a semi-truck and several other vehicles, resulting in a catastrophic loss of life and unimaginable trauma for those affected. We were merely going about our day when the lack of proper caution signaling at this intersection turned our lives upside down.

This tragic incident could have been prevented or mitigated if there had been adequate caution lights installed at this hazardous location. Highway 68, particularly around Collinsville, is notorious for its dangerous intersections, which pose a constant threat to the safety of drivers and pedestrians alike. Without timely warnings or adequate notification of intersection crossings, drivers often find themselves in precarious situations that could have tragic outcomes.

Further compounding the danger is the high volume of commercial trucks that travel this route, making clear and visible traffic control measures even more critical. According to the Alabama Department of Transportation, approximately 15,000 vehicles, including 2,000 trucks, use this highway daily. The lack of effective safety measures creates an environment ripe for accidents.

To prevent future tragedies and safeguard our community, we urge the local Department of Transportation and city officials to take immediate action by installing more caution lights at key intersections along Highway 68. These changes are not just necessary; they are vital for the safety of everyone who uses these roads.

We believe that a relatively small investment in public safety infrastructure like caution lights can save countless lives and prevent injuries. Other communities have seen a significant reduction in accidents after similar measures were implemented.

I implore those in positions of authority to acknowledge and address this issue with the urgency it deserves. Let's transform our roads into safer places for everyone. By signing this petition, you are supporting a safer future for our community and preventing avoidable losses. Please sign and share to spread the message. Together, we can make a difference.
