The Issue

As the days grow shorter during the winter months, the absence of lighting in leash-free dog parks across Mississauga presents a significant safety hazard for both dogs and humans. Dog owners, including myself, are deeply concerned about the growing risks associated with early evening darkness in these vital recreational spaces.

For residents of Mississauga, leash-free dog parks are not just amenities; they are essential communal spaces that provide an opportunity for dogs to exercise freely and socialize. However, low visibility in these parks during the early evenings restricts our ability to watch over our pets adequately, navigate the terrain safely, and prevent possible mishaps or injuries.

In addition to the inconvenience, the lack of proper lighting raises safety concerns. In darkness, it becomes increasingly difficult to detect debris, uneven ground, or other hazards that could cause injuries to both pets and owners. Moreover, the absence of light can make it challenging to notice if a stranger or another animal poses a potential threat in the area, putting everyone at risk.

Several cities have addressed similar concerns by implementing solar-powered or energy-efficient LED lighting solutions in public spaces, ensuring these areas are safe and accessible even after sundown.

We urge the city council and relevant authorities in Mississauga to undertake the installation of effective lighting solutions in all leash-free dog parks. This would enhance the usability of these parks, extend their accessibility hours, and significantly improve safety for all visitors.

Sign this petition to support a safer, better-lit environment for both dogs and their human companions in Mississauga's leash-free dog parks. Together, we can ensure that these parks remain welcoming and safe gathering spots for the community, no matter the time of year.
