The Issue

Imagine walking down the Highland Park Line Trail between Griffiths Drive and Edmonds Street in Burnaby during a peaceful evening walk or returning home late from work. It's an essential pathway for many residents, commuters, and joggers in the community. But as soon as the sun sets, this path becomes dark and potentially unsafe. There are ZERO lights along this section of the path. As a member of this community, I know firsthand how crucial it is to ensure our paths are well-lit to protect everyone using them.

The City of Burnaby values the safety and well-being of its residents, and therefore, installing adequate lighting along this stretch can significantly enhance security and accessibility for all.

Currently, the lack of lighting poses a risk not just to pedestrians, dog-walkers and cyclists but also can deter people from using this vital path at night. According to crime prevention experts, well-lit areas are less likely to become sites of criminal activity, as proper illumination deters potential offenders and provides a safer environment for everyone. Not to mention, the coyotes!

Moreover, these lights would support Burnaby's active transportation plans by encouraging more walking and cycling, reducing our environmental footprint, and promoting healthier lifestyles within the community.

Governments from around the world have successfully improved public safety by merely upgrading pathway lighting. For instance, a study in New York City demonstrated a significant reduction in nighttime crime after the installation of additional street lighting.

Let's urge the City of Burnaby to follow these proven steps towards safer streets by installing lights along the Highland Park Line Trail. This initiative is not only achievable but also necessary for the safety and peace of mind of all who use this cherished pathway.

By signing this petition, you are advocating for a safer community. Let's come together to take action and ensure that the Highland Park Line Trail is accessible and secure for everyone, day and night. Please sign this petition to support our initiative!

I have been lobbying the City for the last year for these lights with little movement. Hopefully more awareness and support for the cause will help!
