The Issue

Living in Christchurch, many of us have discovered a passion and sense of community at the Washington Way Skatepark. However, as winter descends, we find ourselves struggling to engage in the activities we love due to poor lighting conditions. The inadequate lighting in the park not only hampers our ability to use the park safely post-sunset but also diminishes the vibrant culture that thrives in this skatepark.

Nothing is more disappointing than cutting short an exciting session because visibility is compromised. It isn't just a matter of convenience; it’s about safety and the preservation of a vital community space. For many of us, skateboarding and bmx isn’t just a hobby but a lifestyle that promotes physical health, creativity, and a connection to our community.

Scattered LED floodlights or solar-powered lighting solutions could significantly increase visibility, ensuring the safety and enjoyment of the park for skaters of all ages.

Furthermore, data suggests that well-lit public spaces contribute to lower crime rates and enhance community well-being. By investing in functional lighting, we are not only fostering an inclusive and safe environment for skatepark users, but we are also enhancing the reputation of Christchurch’s public amenities.

We urge the Christchurch City Council and local authorities to prioritize the installation of efficient and functional lighting at Washington Way Skatepark. Let’s work together to support our community and keep our skatepark alive during those long winter nights.

Please sign this petition to show your support for this cause, and help us ensure that our beloved skatepark remains a vibrant and safe haven for all enthusiasts, no matter the season.
