Install flood lights at David Crombie Park

Install flood lights at David Crombie Park

The Issue

David Crombie Park, located at Sherbourne and The Esplanade in Toronto, has unfortunately become a hub for undesirable activities. As a resident of the area, I have witnessed distressing incidents involving open drug use, public urination and defecation, and outbreaks of violence. This park, which should be a sanctuary and recreational area for the community, now feels unsafe and has driven fear into its rightful users—us, the local residents.

The current state of our park is affecting not only the quality of life for those who live nearby but also the environment itself. The rise in disorderly conduct has contributed to an increase in rodent infestations, and the potential for more serious incidents is all too high. Numerous fires have erupted, further jeopardizing the safety and sanctity of our beloved park.

I have even been personally attacked in this once peaceful space, which further highlights the urgency of addressing these issues. It is imperative that we work towards reclaiming David Crombie Park as a safe and welcoming environment for families, children, and all residents.

A practical and immediate solution to deter unlawful activities is the installation of flood lights against the outer backwall of the Toronto Hydro facility adjacent to the park. Adequate lighting would drastically reduce the anonymity that darkness provides to those looking to misuse our communal space.

Studies have shown that increasing lighting in public areas can significantly decrease crime rates and improve community safety. By illuminating the park during evening and nighttime hours, we can discourage drug use, loitering, and other illicit behavior, creating a space that not only feels safe but actually is safe.

I urge Toronto Hydro and local authorities to consider this essential change. Let's reclaim David Crombie Park and restore the sense of security and community pride it deserves.

Please sign this petition to support the installation of flood lights and help transform our park into a space of safety and joy for everyone.
