Install CCTV in our apartment building lobby

Install CCTV in our apartment building lobby
The Issue
Living in a neighborhood where safety isn't guaranteed is challenging on its own. In our apartment building, package theft and an overall threatening environment have become unbearably common. Most heartbreakingly, a cancer patient residing in our building recently had her package stolen. As the temperatures drop with the onset of snow, she ordered a cardigan to keep warm during a chemotherapy journey that makes her frequently chilly and uncomfortable. The thefts do not stop there though.
A disabled woman in our building, who struggles with mobility, has had her crucial living necessities stolen. Personally, I've had my deliveries taken repeatedly, which has also been the experience of numerous other residents. The alarming frequency of these incidents underscores a significant problem that needs our immediate attention. Reinforcing the need for a solution, the lobby entrance often hosts individuals who are intoxicated or unfamiliar, further emphasizing the urgency for safety measures.
The solution to these growing concerns is the installation of CCTV cameras in our lobby. Studies show that visible surveillance can deter crime and increase the sense of security among residents. CCTV cameras will not only capture evidence if theft does occur but also serve as a deterrent to would-be criminals. Other neighborhoods that have installed CCTV have reported reductions in crime rates, creating a safer environment for everyone.
I have repeatedly attempted to print out a physical petition and leave it on the front door just for it to get taken down, even ripped off, that same day. There was also a large piece of paper informing people that stealing other people's mail is a felony and federal offense, to which even that has been removed too.
We urgently call upon our building management to prioritize safety by installing CCTV cameras immediately. By doing this, we can protect vulnerable members of our community and ensure a secure living space for all residents. Please support this vital change and help us create a safe haven within our own homes by signing this petition. Together, we can make a difference and restore peace of mind for all residents in our building.
Increased Public Safety Concerns in the City & Importance of CCTV
In addition to the ongoing issues within our building, Minneapolis is currently experiencing a heightened climate of public safety concern and unrest related to federal immigration enforcement operations. Over the past few weeks, federal agents—including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and U.S. Border Patrol—have been active in the city as part of a broader enforcement surge. In multiple high-profile incidents, federal agents have fatally shot U.S. citizens, including Renée Good and Alex Pretti, during enforcement operations. These shootings have sparked widespread protests, large public demonstrations, and heightened anxiety throughout the community.
The effects of these events extend beyond the immediate locations of protests. Many residents are reporting increased unease in public and shared spaces due to tensions between federal agents, protestors, and other community members. This environment has, understandably, raised concerns about personal safety and the security of residential spaces.
In times of broader public unrest and when normal patterns of community life are disrupted, the need for basic, reliable security inside our own building becomes even more critical. Residents deserve to live in a place where they feel safe accessing the mailroom, entering the lobby, or walking to and from their homes without fear of theft, intrusion, or threatening behavior.
The installation of CCTV cameras in the lobby and mailroom:
- Provides documented, recorded evidence if incidents occur;
- Helps deter not only package theft but also loitering, unauthorized access, and potential escalation of unsafe behavior;
- Signals that property management takes resident safety seriously — especially in a time when community tensions and concerns about safety citywide are elevated.
This is not a luxury — it is a reasonable, widely accepted security measure that aligns with expectations for multi-unit residential properties, especially when broader public safety concerns are present.
