Install CCTV at Riversmeet skate park for safety
The Issue
My heart aches as I share a personal story that has become all too common at the Riversmeet Sports Centre skate park. Just last week, my son and his friends, who frequent the skate park to practice and socialize, were subjected to a horrifying experience. They were bullied and physically assaulted by a group of older kids. The trauma and fear that fills their hearts now is overwhelming, and as a parent, it is devastating to see our children lose a safe space for their recreation.
The lack of surveillance at the skate park has created a breeding ground for such incidents to occur. Young children and teenagers who come to enjoy skating, biking, or simply gathering with friends, now fear for their safety. Incidents of bullying and physical assaults are not isolated; they are increasing and leaving lasting emotional scars on our youth.
In 2019 alone, according to national crime statistics, there was a 15% increase in violent incidents in public recreational areas across the UK. Without adequate preventive measures such as CCTV cameras, environments like our local skate park can spiral into unsafe zones, deterring children from accessing spaces meant for their well-being and development.
We, as a concerned community, are calling upon the management of Riversmeet Sports Centre and the local council to take immediate action by installing CCTV at the skate park. This is not just a plea for improved security but a necessary step towards safeguarding our children and restoring peace of mind to hundreds of parents.
Installing CCTV cameras will act as a deterrent for potential bullies and assailants and provide law enforcement with the evidence they need to act swiftly and efficiently when incidents occur. The presence of surveillance will create a sense of security, allowing children to freely and safely enjoy their time at the skate park.
I urge everyone who values the safety and well-being of our children to support this cause. Let's join forces to ensure that Riversmeet Skate Park becomes a safe haven once again. Please sign this petition to demand the installation of CCTV at the skate park.
