The Issue

The well-being of our special needs students can no longer be left to assumptions and trust alone. To enhance their safety, potential for better learning conditions, and their general rights, we are asking for the installation of security cameras in all special needs classrooms of Chesapeake Public Schools.

This call for action is not without basis. According to a report from the National Disabled Law Center, numerous incidents of abuse frequently go unreported, leading to a lack of visibility for these vulnerable children (source: National Disabled Law Center). Furthermore, the U.S. Government Accountability Office acknowledges that restraint and seclusion are used disproportionally on students with disabilities (source: U.S. Government Accountability Office). Cameras in classrooms would serve as a huge deterrent to these abuses and would promote accountability and trust in our education system.

Teachers of special needs students would also benefit from this move. Video footage could be reviewed for self-improvement and as evidence of teaching competence. It could also provide meaningful insights into student behavior, learning progress and the overall effectiveness of teaching strategies.

We are not seeking to invade private spaces or violate anyone's rights; instead, we advocate for these changes with the pure intent to optimize the education system for the benefit of our special needs students and their dedicated teachers.

By signing this petition, you are not only supporting safer learning environments for special needs students, but you are advocating for transparency, accountability, and better education practices in our schools. Please sign this petition today. Let's advocate for those that can't advocate for themselves by ensuring safety and accountability in special needs classrooms together.
