Install Bollards & CCTV to Protect Pedestrians on Edinburgh’s Cycle Paths

The Issue

Our local paths are not safe. Many locals have experienced near misses with balaclava wearing menaces recklessly driving at speed down the pedestrian/ cycle paths around Edinburgh.

On Sunday 20th of October 2024 at 16.20 a car entered Hawthornvale Path, speeding towards Ferry Road Path being chased by police. A local mum reportedly pulled her 8 and 10 year olds out of the way of the speeding vehicle saving their lives, but their dog Daisy, was tragically hit by the car and may need two amputations. The children and mum who witnessed their family dog violently hit are traumatised. It is a miracle that no one was killed.

Enough is enough.

This must not happen again.

Edinburgh City Council we call on you to install visible, strong bollards at all cycle path entrances to prevent cars from using them to evade capture. Further, we collectively call on you to install CCTV at path entrances to deter the use of motorbikes on the paths and assist the police in supervising public safety.

The idea is that the bollards would stop a larger vehicle like a car entering, but they could be collapsible for ambulances or emergency vehicles to enter when required. While the CCTV would allow police to supervise where criminals riding motorbikes or dirtbikes enter the cycle network, so they can scramble police to the possible exits. In turn, this might deter these balaclava wearing menaces using the pedestrian and cycle paths as their own super highway.

These measures don’t require significant funding or time to put in place and would benefit everyone. We call on Edinburgh City Council to take immediate action NOW to improve the safety of these local much loved paths for residents.

If you have any information relating to this incident please contact Police Scotland Edinburgh, report number: 2291

We send our thoughts to those affected by this incident and hope Daisy the dog recovers well.
