The Issue

To: Irvine Unified School District Board of Education, Irvine Unified School District Facilities & Maintenance, Northwood High School Administration, and the Irvine Community

We, the undersigned parents, students, alumni, and community members, respectfully call on the Irvine Unified School District (IUSD) and Northwood High School to install field lighting on the Northwood High School baseball field. This improvement is urgently needed to protect student safety, support academic balance, and ensure equitable athletic opportunities.

Why Baseball Field Lights Are Essential

Student Safety

Without lights, games must be scheduled early to maximize daylight. Earlier start times compress pre-game routines and can limit warm-up time—raising the risk of preventable injuries such as strains and sprains.

Reduced Liability Risk

When athletes are placed in rushed or suboptimal conditions due to scheduling constraints, preventable injuries become foreseeable. Installing lights is a proactive, safety-focused step that reduces risk exposure.

Fair Competition and Equity

Many schools and facilities with lit fields can schedule later games that better align with school-day timing. Northwood baseball athletes deserve the same safe, supportive conditions available to other programs and peer campuses.

Stronger Community Engagement

Evening games allow more families and community members to attend, strengthening school spirit and community pride.

Less Classroom Disruption

Lighting enables later home game start times, reducing or eliminating the need for students to miss instructional time for home contests.

Our Request

We respectfully urge IUSD and Northwood High School to:

  • Add an agenda item to formally discuss installing field lights, including key milestones, required approvals, and a projected completion timeline.
  • Prioritize student safety and academic access by scheduling home games in ways that minimize missed class time once lighting is available.
  • Acknowledge this petition and the community concerns regarding safety, equity, and academic impact related to the absence of field lighting.

Closing Statement

The community is asking for a practical, proven facility improvement that supports student well-being and educational equity. Installing lights is a long-term solution that improves safety, strengthens community involvement, and reduces recurring academic disruption.
