The Issue

Growing up and attending schools in Louisiana, we students feel the heat on an entirely different level. During the sweltering months of late spring and summer, riding on a school bus without air conditioning feels like being trapped in a sauna. It is not just uncomfortable; often, we become so hot and sweaty that concentrating at school becomes difficult. We are basically being boiled alive before we've even started our day.

The reality is that excessive heat can have detrimental effects on our health, especially for children and teens. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), high temperatures can lead to heat exhaustion or heatstroke, symptoms of which include dizziness, nausea, rapid heartbeat, and even fainting. On days when temperatures soar to 90°F and above, our school buses become hazardous environments.

The state of Louisiana often experiences some of the hottest temperatures in the country. A study by the Union of Concerned Scientists pointed out that Louisiana could expect more frequent and intense heatwaves in coming years due to climate change, making air conditioning on school buses not a luxury, but a necessity.

What we propose is straightforward: Develop a plan to install air conditioning systems on all school buses operating within Louisiana. This initiative could be gradually implemented, starting with the hottest districts first, ensuring that no child suffers the dangers of overheating while simply trying to get to school.

By prioritizing student safety and comfort, we are investing in our future. We urge school districts to allocate funds for retrofitting buses, seeking additional state or federal grants if necessary. Increased corporate sponsorships or partnerships with local businesses could also provide financial support.

Please join us in taking action. Sign this petition to demand that Louisiana school officials implement the necessary changes to safeguard the wellbeing of our students during their commutes. Together, we can ensure a safer, more comfortable journey to school for every child in the state.
