The issue
For years, the parents, teachers, and community members of St Stephen's School on Ridgewood Road, Algester, have been tirelessly advocating for the installation of a zebra crossing. Our concern is the safety and well-being of our students and young children, especially since the current safety island is insufficient for ensuring a secure passage across this busy road.
With the recent addition of a daycare facility nearby, the need for a more effective and safer crossing solution has become increasingly urgent. Every day, dozens of children and caregivers make this precarious journey, risking their safety as they attempt to navigate this traffic without the protection and visibility that a zebra crossing provides.
The solution we propose is to replace the existing safety island with a proper zebra crossing at the entrance of St Stephen’s School. This would not only slow down traffic but also provide a clear, designated area for pedestrians to cross safely.
Statistics have consistently shown that pedestrian crossings significantly reduce accidents and near misses. Schools that have implemented zebra crossings have reported a dramatic drop in incidents involving vehicles and pedestrians.
Let’s come together as a community to push local authorities to prioritise this project. Our children's safety should never be compromised when the solution is clear and actionable. By signing this petition, we can collectively demand that the local council addresses this critical safety issue and take action. Please join us in making the roads safer for all our children.
