The Issue
We are requesting the immediate installation of a traffic light at the intersection of 25th Street and West Oklahoma Avenue, where students from Pulaski High School cross daily to get to and from school. Recently, a crossing guard at this intersection was struck by a vehicle and seriously injured while protecting students. This tragic incident demonstrates that the current traffic controls are insufficient and that this intersection poses a serious danger to pedestrians. Pulaski High School students cross 25th and Oklahoma multiple times each day, often during heavy traffic periods. Drivers frequently fail to stop, slow down, or yield, placing students, crossing guards, and community members at constant risk. Installing a traffic light at this intersection would—-Improve driver awareness and compliance. Reduce speeding and unsafe driving behaviors. Provide safe, clearly designated crossing times. Protect students, staff, crossing guards, and pedestrians. Help prevent future injuries or loss of life—
We should not wait for another serious injury — or the possible injury of a student — before taking action. We respectfully urge the City of Milwaukee to prioritize a traffic study and install a traffic signal at 25th Street and West Oklahoma Avenue as soon as possible to ensure the safety of Pulaski High School students and the surrounding community. Our students deserve a safe route to and from school.
