The Issue
The safety of our community is at risk due to a high-traffic intersection that lacks a stop sign at the corner of Edgely Avenue and Mount Carmel Avenue. For years, residents have witnessed near misses at this location, which presents as a hazard for drivers, pedestrians, and cyclists alike. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, nearly 40 percent of all reported traffic accidents occur at intersections. The absence of a stop sign at this crossing is an oversight that compromises safety. While local police reports may not fully capture the numerous instances of reckless driving and near accidents, the hazardous conditions are evident to those who live nearby. Installing a stop sign and cross walk is a simple, cost-effective measure that can significantly reduce risk by regulating traffic flow, lowering vehicle speeds, and increasing driver awareness—especially in high-traffic residential areas. Recently, a frightening incident underscored the urgency of this issue. My school-aged child was crossing Mount Carmel Avenue on her way to the bus stop when she was nearly struck by a speeding vehicle. Although no one was injured, this close call only increases the level of concern about the speeding and traffic conditions on this road. I previously contacted the Abington Township to request the installation of a stop sign at this intersection, but was told that the lack of documented crash data did not justify one. Please join in advocating for a safer neighborhood by signing this petition. Your support will help ensure the safety and well-being of everyone who travels through this intersection. Together, we can urge our local officials to act now. Thank you for your consideration.
