The Issue

When the housing development to the East of Gresley Way was proposed, we requested that East Herts District Council insist that a signalled Pegasus Crossing be provided by the developers through a section 106 agreement, which would have obligated them to fund it. However, East Herts District Council did not act on this request, leaving a significant safety concern unaddressed.

The development has drastically increased the traffic along Gresley Way, turning what was once a safer area into a hazardous crossing for walkers, cyclists, and horse riders. This stretch of road lies between the Stevenage 107 Bridleway and the Aston 004 Bridleway, two highly frequented routes used by the community for recreation and commuting. Without a crossing, local residents, including children and families, face substantial risks trying to navigate this road.

Providing a signalled Pegasus Crossing would not only ensure safer passage for all, including young children, pet owners, and equestrians, but it would also encourage more outdoor activities by eliminating the fear of accidents. Such crossings are specifically designed to cater to both pedestrians and horse riders, offering increased visibility and safety for all.

Statistics from the Department for Transport show that the risk of pedestrian casualties drastically reduces when proper crossings are installed on busy roads. Moreover, creating such infrastructure supports sustainable travel modes, aligning with national and local efforts in promoting eco-friendly alternatives and reducing vehicular congestion.

We urge the local authorities to reconsider the need for a signalled Pegasus Crossing in this vital location, making it a priority now more than ever, given the expansion of the housing development. The community deserves to move freely and safely across Gresley Way.

Sign this petition to call for immediate action from the Stevenage Borough Council and East Herts District Council to make our roads safer for everyone. Together, we can make a difference and help secure the installation of this crucial safety measure.
