The Issue

My dear friend Tia was tragically hit and killed by a car while trying to cross the intersection at the Hy-Vee and Palmer House Hotel on Gordon Drive in Sioux City, IA earlier this year. She was on her bicycle, and like many others, she was trying to navigate a crossing without any proper pedestrian crosswalk. This bustling intersection is crucial for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic, with countless residents frequently crossing from the Palmer House Hotel to reach the Hy-Vee on the opposite side.

The current traffic light system doesn't offer a safe solution for pedestrians. The light doesn't remain green long enough to allow people to safely cross, especially during peak hours. Without a dedicated crosswalk, pedestrians are forced to brave the busy traffic, putting their lives at risk every single time they cross.

A roundabout at this intersection is a realistic and effective solution. Roundabouts have been proven to reduce the likelihood of accidents by 37%, according to the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. They allow for a smoother flow of traffic and provide natural breaks that make it easier for pedestrians to cross safely. Moreover, they are more efficient and environmentally friendly as they reduce idle times and decrease vehicle emissions.

Installing a roundabout will not only honor the memory of Tia but will also provide a safer environment for all Sioux City residents and travelers. We urge the local authorities, including the City Council of Sioux City and the Department of Transportation, to reconsider the current setup of this perilous intersection and take immediate action to prevent further tragedies.
