The Issue

Growing up in Tyrrellspass, County Westmeath, I remember the absence of a local playground vividly. My childhood was filled with cycling around the streets or journeying to neighboring towns just to find a place with swings and slides. It was a simple joy I missed out on—a joy I wish to bring to the children of our community today, including my own two kids.

Our village is a vibrant community with an increasing number of young families. However, we lack an essential element for our children’s growth and happiness—a safe, local playground where they can play, exercise, and socialize with other kids their age. A community playground would not only provide a fun, secure place for children but also promote a sense of community and belonging among residents.

Many studies show that playgrounds are crucial for children's development. They encourage physical activity, build social skills, and support mental well-being. According to an article from the UK-based Children’s Playground Association, access to play areas can significantly improve children's motor skills and academic performance.

An inclusive playground in Tyrrellspass would benefit everyone in the village. It would provide a safe environment tailored for all age groups, with equipment that encourages both physical activity and imaginative play. Features could include swings, slides, climbing frames, and perhaps even a sand pit or water play area.

To make this dream a reality, we need the support of local authorities and fellow residents like you. The first step is to secure a suitable location and funding, with potential help from county initiatives or state grants dedicated to community development.

Please join me in advocating for the installation of a playground here in Tyrrellspass. Let’s ensure our kids do not spend their childhood just cycling around or waiting for weekend trips to other towns. Sign this petition and support a brighter, more playful future for our children.
