A message from the girls of Troop 1277:

Walking to school, riding bikes, and safely connecting with friends are fundamental to life for kids like us in Franklin Square. Currently, the lack of a safe and effective crossing at New Hyde Park Road and Washington Street severely limits our ability to do this.

Years ago, a crosswalk was installed at this corner and a dependable crossing guard offered help crossing during school hours. However, that essential service was discontinued before we started elementary  school. Not to mention, the crossing guard was not available during non-school times like weekends. We have observed that drivers frequently fail to yield to pedestrians, child and adult alike, at this intersection, leaving a significant and unacceptable gap in our neighborhood’s safety.

This issue will be amplified next year when we are in 7th grade, as those of us living on the west side of New Hyde Park Road no longer qualify for a school bus. This forces us to cross this dangerous intersection to attend or leave school, increasing our risk daily.

We deserve a safer journey.

The Proven Solution: Pedestrian-Activated Flashing Lights

We are imploring the Town of Hempstead and local road safety authorities to approve the installation of a pedestrian-activated blinking light crosswalk (Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon or PHB) at this crucial intersection.

This is a proven and effective solution to safeguard the all the members of our community:

Research shows that these flashing lights significantly increase driver awareness and dramatically reduce accidents.
According to the Federal Highway Administration (FHWA), PHBs at crosswalks can reduce pedestrian crashes by 55% or more. We ourselves have seen its success on Nassau Blvd. by the bagel store.

A blinking light is the necessary change that will protect all the people of Franklin Square, whether they are on their way to school, running errands or just out enjoying the neighborhood.

Our Call to Action

Protecting children like us and ensuring our neighborhoods' safety must be the highest priority for  all.

We, the girls of Troop 1277, urge local authorities to act swiftly in implementing this vital change. Every signature on this petition represents a unified voice for community safety and children's well-being.

Please sign this petition and help us implement a change that can save and protect lives. Let's come together to make New Hyde Park Road safer for all pedestrians.
