Bring back "BPD" hashtag on instagram
The Issue
In November of 2020, Instagram policies changed and the hashtag for borderline personality disorder, shortened to “BPD,” has been removed and hidden on the Instagram platform. While we understand wanting to stop the spread of possible false misinformation and harmful content related to the 2020 US election, (a direct quote from the “learn more” tab on the hidden BPD hashtag) the BPD hashtag is and has been used as a source of community for so many people who struggle with mental illnesses. Considering that the community guidelines are referenced in the info tab when searching for the hidden BPD hashtag, you would think Instagram would want to encourage the community in which they have provided the platform for cultivating this community, rather than eliminating it altogether. When searching for “depression” or “suicide” hashtags on Instagram, the posts are shown and not hidden. You have not hidden other hashtags for mental illnesses, such as OCD, bipolar, schizophrenia, anxiety, and psychosis. To suppress one specific mental illness is not only wrong, it is harmful. Removing the BPD hashtag does not stop the spread of harmful misinformation, but instead creates a harmful environment to people who have already spent so much time being misunderstood and pushed out. Pushed out of families, out of therapy, even out of the mental illness community! Please don’t delete the only community that some BPD sufferers have.
