There are still more than 500 children who were separated at the US Mexican border from their parents and who have never been reunited. The government does not know who to reunite with who.  We could use DNA matches to reunite these families.

This problem was created by our government and our government needs to take responsibility and resolve it. Here's how:

1 - DNA test the over 500 children who have not been reunited.

2 - Offer free DNA tests by mail for any parent who claims they were separated from a child.  These tests kits should be able to be requested over the phone, by mail, or internet.   Work with one of the existing DNA ancestry firms to get the testing / matching done.   A relative of mine who was adopted 50 years ago was just matched with her family. If it can work for her it can work here. 

3 - Advertise in likely locations on TV / radio / newspapers that these tests are available and that the US wants to make this right and what our plans are to do so.  The advertisement should make it clear that the parents will be treated respectfully. They make the call, the test kit is sent, they send it back, and we match them up.

Once we find them, how do we make it right?  It’s not enough to just reunite them. We must make amends.

1 - Apologize, fly them to the US to reunite with their children. 

2 - If they still want to live here, offer the family permanent green cards along with a path to citizenship.

3 - Find the family a decent place to live, jobs, child care, health insurance, counseling, and a substantial chunk of cash, maybe $10K / year for the next 20 years.

4 - If they don’t want to live here, offer a similar package to get the family settled somewhere out of the country.
