Insist on Switching Off the Heating in Parliament this Winter

The Issue

Pensioners across our nation face a bleak and bone-chilling winter. Many are struggling with the brutal cold while attending to their everyday needs. They're dreading the winter, and I am one of them. Our houses become like ice boxes, forcing us to huddle under multiple blankets just to find a bit of warmth. Ironically, we witness the constant hum of heaters from our Parliament buildings, where our elected officials work.

It is unjust that while vulnerable people freeze, our Parliament enjoys the comfort of heating - funded by taxpayer money. The energy consumed by heating Parliament is enormous: According to the UK Parliament's own Environmental Performance Report, Parliament’s gas consumption - the majority of which is used for heating - resulted in just under 6,000 tonnes of CO2 in 2017/18.

This petition calls for a more just and empathetic approach. This winter, let's collectively insist on switching off the heating in Parliament. As these buildings grow chilly, perhaps so too will the empathetic hearts of our elected officials, who will finally experience the biting cold that pensioners endure every winter. This is not a call for discomfort, but a call for understanding and action to address our environmental impact and the unfair burden of energy costs on our nation's elderly.

Please, sign this petition to let Parliament freeze this winter, just as pensioners are expected to.
