"Our lives matter too"
The covid-19 pandemic seems to be a joking matter to some of the local officials currently responsible for making some rather serious decisions. One being possible life or death, when it comes to the issue of leaving nonviolent and traffic offenders sitting in jail. We all know its not a matter of if, but when this will be, considering all staff have the chance of going to the store and being exposed to covid-19 and going into work and passing it along to an inmate. Yes there are precautions being taken by the jail, however not every person with covid-19 shows any signs or symptoms. 1 employee tested positive at the women's prison, now its a matter of time before we see the uprise in positive cases to come.
Judge Frederick Smith of Pittsburg, Kansas municipal and traffic, has now released all non-violent, non person felony inmates and traffic violators. He sent them home to be with their families as is a fair, reasonable decision. While judge Jennifer Brunetti of Pittsburg, Kansas district and Girard, Kansas district seems to have chosen a different tact. Though releases have been made to some non-violent or non person felony inmates, and misdemeanor inmates, it has been of a discriminatory nature. They are picking and choosing who to release based on opinion, feeling, or some such. Because there continues to remain several who fall under that category of still being incarcerated at the Crawford county jail.
Federal prisons in both New York and California released inmates that are high risk or fall under non violent categories. Sedgwick county doing the same.
According to several sources the Kansas governor has begun looking at who, through executive order, could be released from our states county jails and prisons yet nothing has been done, weeks later.
Should we sit waiting as legislature takes their time to make the right decisions on sending our loved ones home to us, where proper health care is available when it becomes necessarylp? All the while Covid-19 is inching closer to being inside the jail walls. Guaranteed to run ramped infecting everyone once inside, as its proven itself to do at each and every nursing home or likewise similarly housed facility to be touched by this pandemic to date. Therefore condemning our loved ones to a possible death sentence. I thought the constitution clearly stated "innocent until proven guilty." However it is more like guilty until proven innocent as most of these inmates are awaiting trial and have not even been convicted of a crime and can't even get before a judge bc they have majority of all court cases rescheduled or on hold until further notice.
Or should we come together as one, as our forefathers before us came together against the oppression of Great Britain during the American revolution? Together as one to ask for relief from the governor. Relief from the very real threat of this virus possibly taking the lives of our loved ones being kept away from us as it is, all around the world at this most trying time in our history. Relief that our families should be home together as one, so we can face together the threat of this pandemic, as even President Donald Trump called it a war. Please don't sit waiting til the last minute, for then it will be far too late.
Thank you for your time reading this. Please sign and share everywhere possible. Again, thank you and God Bless!
Sincerely,
The voice of "all Sek/Ks Nonviolent inmates"
