Initiate Sentencing Reform for Non-Violent Offenders

The Issue

For Brian Yeary, a non-violent drug offender, justice turned a blind eye. Facing an alarming sentence of 91 years in a maximum-security prison, Brian's life was reduced to penal servitude. Pedophilic offenders and murderers, criminals who committed far more heinous and violent crimes, often receive just one-third or even less of Brian's sentence. It's not a sentence, it's a lifetime.

The discrepancy in such sentencing is not only draconian but also inherently unjust. The grave disjunction in our legal system is exposed by the fact that a non-violent offender faces a life sentence while murderers often return to society after two decades. An effort to ensure that drug offenders pay their penances should not equate to extracting their lifetimes as tolls.

Our sentencing guidelines and laws need reform. They need a transformation that recognizes the gravity and violence of crimes, and implements sentences accordingly. Furthermore, we must replace these unjust laws with functional recidivism programs. These programs show success, reducing recidivism rates by up to 20% (National Institute of Justice). It is high time to discard our archaic and unjust sentencing system, and make way for a system that is steeped in justice, reformation, and rehabilitation.

Reform sentencing guidelines and laws. Advocate for recidivism programs. Stand against over sentencing for non-violent offenders. This is not simply about Brian Yeary; it is about every non-violent offender who has paid, is paying, or might pay with a life sentence for a non-violent crime. Echo this plea for justice and equality in our legal system. Sign this petition now, and help us bring about a future where sentencing is just, fair, and reformative.
