Update 8/31/2025

Dear citizen supporter of Walton in Action,

We have major breaking news to announce today, and a call to action.

Investigations by our all-volunteer team have developed the evidence we need to constitute legal grounds for recall of Walton County Chairman David G. Thompson.

We're not at liberty to reveal all the details yet, but stand assured --- we've got what we need to back up a legally valid recall petition.

Our demand now to Mr. Thompson is summed up in our new hashtag #ResignOrRecall.   He faces the choice to resign or face a fully organized recall campaign.

Please join us on the Historic Courthouse steps in downtown Monroe for a press conference at 5:00pm on Tuesday, September 2.

Immediately following, if you are available, please help us fill the Commission's meeting room audience seats for the regular monthly meeting at 6:00pm.

Full information is in the press release we are blasting out today.

Thank you for your willingness to stand with us. Your voice and your time truly matter in this fight. This movement is built by neighbors, for neighbors, and every action we take together brings us closer to the transparency, fairness, and accountability our Walton County deserves.

We’re glad to have you with us. Let’s make history together.

In unity,
Walton In Action

Update 8/15/2025

In the latest video from Bill Brooker, he shares just 1 ... Of MANY communications of Mr. Thompson's responses to citizens contacting him on their thoughts, and wishes for a special meeting to recast the vote.

Video: https://www.facebook.com/share/v/17R2HM1iYh/

They get worse, without a doubt. Heck of a way to conduct oneself to their constituents on broken campaign promises.

Under Georgia’s Open Records Act (O.C.G.A. § 50-18-70 et seq.), communications from a public official using a government-issued email address are considered public records. Sharing this screenshot is lawful so long as private citizen details are protected.

Even with the ACCG, which Mr. Thompson is a member of:
https://accg.org/docs/handbook/Abuse%20of%20Power.pdf

Page 30:
""Once again, if a county commissioner feels compelled to state his or her arguments publicly, it is best to stick to facts and not personalities. A reasoned and well-presented argument on the merits of a dispute will likely garner respect. Conversely, mudslinging and attempts at character assassination may grab a headline or some “likes” on social media, but such tactics quickly slip into a downward spiral where all participants in the end lose their honor and respect in the community."

....
Obviously, we the citizens of Walton County, are getting somewhere!

3 Commissioners are seeking on behalf of all who have reached out, a special meeting to hopefully recast the vote on the residential property tax increase!

The Group:
https://www.facebook.com/share/g/1LU4zY1ENy/

The Website:
https://stopwaltontaxhike.com/

Phase 1:
Challenge current commissioners for a special meeting (In Process already!), to recast the vote on the millage rate increase, and influence 1 vote flip, this way there is no split, and keeps #TaxinThompson from being that split vote.
IF we skip this, doesn't matter on recall, the tax hike remains in place.
Phase 2:
Petition for Recall (Started..). Have to have 10% of District 1, or 30% of viable, verified, voters from the 2024 election signatures overall. They have to be Name, Address, Contact on Pen & Paper to align with the voter records.
Phase 3:
Remember where they stood on that vote in, replace them next election.
Keep hammering them with communications!

Update! 8/10/2025

Please see the video from Bill Brooker. There is a movement currently in play to have a special meeting, and most importantly- Before Sept. 1st!!

Email Template below to send to your commissioner:

Dear Commissioner,

I urge you to join at least two fellow commissioners in calling a special meeting to rescind the 19.55% millage rate increase before the fast approaching deadline. Balancing the budget by placing a heavier tax burden on residents is fiscally irresponsible and unacceptable and I personally want to thank you for recognizing this and voting accordingly. This increase will hit families, seniors, and small businesses hard, and it must be reconsidered immediately. If you take this stand, you will have strong, visible support from citizens across the county who are ready to show up and make their voices heard.

We are counting on you to put the community’s interests first.

RECALL PETITIONS….PLEASE READ
Friends, while I appreciate your passion, online/digital petitions such as change. org are NOT an acceptable legal means by which to initiate a recall of an elected official in Georgia.
I just got off the phone with the election office of Walton County and confirmed the above to be true. Recall petitions must be pen-to-paper signatures. There is a specific process that must be followed for a legal recall of any elected official. If this is something you are seriously interested in pursuing, I suggest you start here:

(Copy&Paste the Link to Legal Info On This or Click)

If this is the case, I'll certainly follow up on "The Plan" for a Paper/Pen Style!!

Thanks - Ryan

David Thompson was elected as Chair Commissioner in Walton County, GA, on the strength of his promise to the people: no increase in millage rate. However, not only did he fail to uphold this promise, but he also became the pivotal vote in favor of a historic 19.55% millage rate increase. This significant decision directly contradicts his electoral mandate and disproportionately affects the property owners of Walton County.

While other budgetary issues exist, such as skewed commercial tax assessments, it appears that rather than exploring alternate solutions, this massive financial burden has been unfairly placed on the shoulders of residents at a time when economic conditions are overwhelmingly challenging. Rising inflation and growing concerns about affordability make this rate increase even more unjustifiable.

According to the Georgia Municipal Association Handbook, initiating a recall requires the support of 100 electors or 10% of the voters from Walton County. This petition seeks to amass this necessary support from the residents who are directly impacted by Commissioner Thompson's decision.

With the economic climate as it is, every financial decision needs to be scrutinized, and those in power need to be held accountable for their actions. It is crucial for the people of Walton County to have leadership that represents their best interests and keeps their promises.

We urge Walton County residents and voters to support this petition to recall Commissioner David Thompson. By signing, you are voicing your dissent against unrepresentative leadership and advocating for a government that serves its people responsibly and transparently. Let us stand together to create a stronger, more accountable leadership for Walton County. Please sign this petition and help initiate a change for the better.
