Initiate Humane Management of Feral Animals at Caroni Bird Sanctuary and Nationwide
The Issue
Recent reports from the Caroni Bird Sanctuary, a vital ecological site in Trinidad and Tobago, reveal concerning proposals by the Trinidad and Tobago Incoming Tour Operators Association, advocating for euthanasia as part of managing the rising feral cat population. These proposals are accompanied by calls for additional signage, CCTV installations, and strict enforcement of laws against animal dumping. These measures come amidst rumours that in the past, some individuals, potentially including boat operators and sanctuary employees, have resorted to poisoning and shooting cats with pellet guns. Unfortunately, recent upgrades to the sanctuary have not prioritised humane animal management practices such as relocation, spaying, and neutering.
Furthermore, recent media articles and social media debates, driven in part by tour operators, have aggressively framed the presence of feral cats solely as a "problem" rather than promoting a balanced approach to co-existence with wildlife. This emotionally charged discourse lacks support from data or research on humane and effective population management methods.
Our petition urgently calls on the Ministry of Agriculture, Environmental Management Authority, and Trinidad and Tobago Police Service to reject these inhumane proposals and to implement proven humane methods, such as Trap-Neuter-Return (TNR) and relocation to no-kill shelters. These approaches, endorsed by global best practices including those recommended by the World Animal Protection, are within the current government's capabilities. Such strategies not only effectively manage feral animal populations but also preserve ecological balance.
By signing this petition, you advocate for the adoption of compassionate and effective animal management strategies that protect our wildlife and ensure a balanced ecosystem at the Caroni Bird Sanctuary and across the nation. Join us in promoting a humane approach that respects all life within our unique biological landscape.
